We recently needed our fence repaired, so like anyone, we took to Facebook Marketplace where we found two so-called fence repairmen located in Brantford, ON (the aforementioned Michael Ross and Shawn Dougherty) who said they would come out and give us a quote.

We hired them and our experience was okay at first - they came when they said they would come. They were nice enough. They definitely showed up on time to collect the thousands of dollars we were paying them. (In cash - are they claiming it on their taxes?)

But when we got home and looked at the job they’d done, we realized they only "fixed" 5 of the 7 posts that needed fixing. For some reason, they fixed an additional sixth post that didn’t need replacing. Not sure why. Of the five they did replace, they didn't properly cement two of them. So…we paid them THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to fix seven posts, but they only did three properly? I’m confused!

When we messaged and asked them to come back fix the fence posts, they asked for more money. Wait, I’m confused again. When one of my clients is unhappy, I bend over backwards to try to turn the situation around for them - especially if it was my fault!

After some back-and-forth, they eventually agreed to come back and re-cement two of the posts.…

Three weeks after they did the fence “repair” they agreed to come on May 11, but when we said we only wanted them to fix the posts they’d agreed too…they got food poisoning. Awful timing, really. So strange!

At that point, I had to take over the communication because J was tired of following up with them and didn’t know how much longer he could stay kind.

They agreed to come at 10a.m. on June 14.

The short version is - they didn’t.

And after answering one call where Mike told me he’d come after his wife got back to watch the kids, they both promptly ghosted us and deleted our Facebook conversation so we couldn’t rate them.

Like all of you, we’re just people trying to feed our kids, give some kindness into the world, and not be assholes. It’s hard to stay positive when faced with people being so awful.

Recap: if you don’t want to throw your money down a hole and want to deal with decent people, don’t talk to these dudes. Michael Ross and Shawn Doughtery will steal your money and run for the hills. I don’t think you want that; I know I didn’t.
