{Girls}

I met these girls a couple of weeks ago while I was teaching in Kona, Hawaii. When a scheduled photo shoot was cancelled, we decided on a whim to do a creative shoot with these lovely ladies.

The girls and I started out with a "vintage" theme...but in the end it kind of just veered towards "gorgeous girls" and that was that.

These girls are so sweet-beautiful on the inside and out. I loved our wee shoot and wish we could have done a few more. Next time we see each other, Ladies?!

Alright then, it's a date.

xx.

"I" is for "Inspiration"

I love anything that inspires me to create and dream. Usually this inspiration takes the form of something simple, something beautiful. Like a long walk on a gorgeous day {specifically fall or spring} or a good conversation with someone who just "gets it."

One day in Buenos Jonathan and I got caught in the rain while we were out and about, so we ran home and spontaneously jumped in the pool. We swam and swam in the warm afternoon downpour; it is one of my favorite memories out of all our years together.

I went to see "Pitch Perfect" with Catherine in December and left freaking out because I knew I was invincible. Music does that to me. {Side note: Jonathan was reticent to watch PP but finally caved one afternoon out of desperation. He's seen it twice more since and sometimes adds his own pizzaz to the music. Yup, that scene is all that you'd imagine and more.}

Sometimes this feeling of inspiration comes from even something silly like a morning at home cleaning our apartment (Jonathan says I am getting "nestier" the other I get) or blogging {!} or watching something on Youtube or dancing at a magical wedding.

I also love new ideas, unique thoughts. Did you know Bon Jovi recently opened a community restaurant in New Jersey that doesn't have prices on the menu and allows people to work for their food if they can't afford to pay? I love this concept. Love, love, love.

Or...speaking of Bhutan... {which we were of course}. Check the link out to the left or watch this {some of the shots are so beautiful!}

{Alsooooo, as a documentarian myself, I'm a bit jealous these people filmed Bhutan before I could get around to it. Sigh. Guess I'll catch the next one. Good job, Ben and team.}

Now-what inspires you?

p.s. And a quote, just because:

“ The respect of those you respect is worth more than the applause of the multitude.”

— Arnold Glasow

p.p.s. I just realized a fatty percentage of this entire post is parenthetical. Guess I should work on that. Hehe.

Foxey Family {Photos of the Family}

I [Layne] met Christian and Sharee 3 years ago while we were all working for PhotogenX in Kona. Since then, we've worked together, attended meetings together (hehe), and Christian, Annie & I all worked together with the 2011 PhotogenX track a couple of years ago...

And now we grab coffee or a treat every few months when we are in the same town and enjoy some good conversation. This year we got extraordinarily inspired and added "family photo shoot!" to our list of activities. Haha.

Ms. Maiya and Baby Elijah are sooooooo cute and obviously Christian and Sharee modeled {or should have} at some point in their gorgeous lives. So we persevered despite a bit of rain and a bit of a sleepy babe. {Elijah, not Jonathan.}

I am happy with how the shoot turned out, if I do say so myself.

Love you, Foxes!

I know that.} One of my Very Favorite Things about this dear friend is that I leave all of our interactions feeling full of hope and with renewed dreams. Sharee is one of the most peaceful, centered, honest souls I know. Sharee- I am grateful to know you! So excited to see you again in May. :)

#Selfies

As Drake is to YOLO, Layne is to #selfies. I have seen the recent trend with instagram and cell phones in general and have waited on the sidelines with bemused sort of superiority.

It really is cute.

But people, don't you know I started this fad ages ago?

{Cambria, once again Layne =ahead of the trend. That's 2 for Layne, 123,343 for the rest of the world. But who is counting.}

And then I met George.

My friend Esther (she's so great) has long dreamed of being a mom and last year she and her hubs, Max, became pregnant with their first. Or wait-how do I say that? ..."announced they were expecting their first"? Hmmmm.

I digress.

We spent many a coffee date last year dreaming together about their coming wee babe. She was due at the end of December so we were hoping we could greet Baby before we left...but George didn't come until a week after we left.

I finally got to meet him this week and he is absolutely delightful. He even smiled when I tapped his cheek and cooed "Ah, he's soooo cute." Translation: He understands me and we are sure to be good friends in the coming years.

And Esther is already such a good mum-it was so fun to see her in this new role.

_MG_2221 _MG_2218 _MG_2211

Aggggh, he's just SO CUTE.

_MG_2200

Let's just say that L squared {Lulu + Layne} don't seem to have the natural motherly instinctives that seem to come to easily to moms like Esther.

She tried to help us, but....

Sigh.

_MG_2197 _MG_2196 _MG_2189Don't judge me by this photo-please, please still let me hold your babies. I love them...just maybe more than they love me.

The Simple Life.

We've been friends with Lulu for 4 years now-she was in Jono's DTS and in my small group oh those many years ago.

Since then, we've hung out in South Africa, her native land of Germany (twice) and Canada (she came over for our wedding.) A fellow photographer, she's been interning at a photo gallery in New York City for the past six months and came to see us on her way back home to the Motherland.

Lulu is here for a bit over a week and let's just say we're taking these days slooooow. She's been over-worked and under-slept for lo these many months, so we Grimes are focusing on a few importants only while she is here:

1. Baking.

2. Sleeping.

3. Eating hot, yummy meals each night.

4. Watching lots of "Big Bang Theory"

and

5. Having consistent walks on snow-lined streets to the nearby Blue Dog. (Starbucks, I will come back and see you soon. Worry not.)

_MG_2164 _MG_2166

We made four kinds of scone: chocolate chip (of course), apple cheese, cinnamon and cranberry lemon.

_MG_2168 _MG_2172 _MG_2175 _MG_2176 _MG_2179 _MG_2180Paul and Susi gave us this grill thing for our wedding and we brought it out on the special occasion of Lulu's first night here. Long, leisurely dinners are The Best. You should come over soon too?

xx.

Praying for a Miracle.

{**Brandon died on Saturday morning and we are praying for grace for his wife and family.}

This is so crazy but a guy I know from "back in the day" {our families went to church for years and years and I also photographed his wedding to his lovely wife Heidi} was shot last week. The details are still hazy, but he was shot and is now in critical condition at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

His wife just gave birth to their third son a few days ago and you can read updates on his battle for life here.

482767_260402974094560_795827649_n 734611_260395617428629_1067390633_n

Here is the story from the Bowling Green Daily News.

A man who inspires kids to be active in the arts is fighting for his life at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after being shot Tuesday by an off-duty Warren County Sheriff’s Office court security officer in a parking lot on U.S. 31-W By-Pass.

Brandon Bradshaw, 27, of Bowling Green, a former Warren County constable, was shot by off-duty Warren County Sheriff’s Office court security officer Thomas Brown, who, according to witness Dan Hartung of Nashville, fired three shots at Bradshaw while Bradshaw was in a white Ford pickup truck in the parking lot

of Michelle’s Consignment Boutique, 1135 U.S. 31-W By-Pass.

The two men appeared to be in a heated argument and Brown identified himself as a law enforcement officer, flashing a badge at Bradshaw, Hartung said.

Kentucky State Police, which investigates law enforcement officer-involved shootings, has not released details about what occurred before the shooting.

“(The shooter) was kind of holding the gun pointing toward the door then he looked down for a minute, and then he started flashing his badge,” said witness Jeremy E. Harris, who works across the street at First Step Prosthetics, at 1136 U.S. 31-W By-Pass.

“The other guy was lifeless,” Jeremy said about the shooting victim later identified as Bradshaw.

Bradshaw, a theater and music lover and the father of three young children – his youngest, Connor, was born just days ago – is passionate about engaging kids in theater at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, where he works as youth theater educator.

“Brandon is the heart and joy of the education department,” said Andee Rudloff, SKyPAC director of education and visual arts. “There is not a child in youth theater in this region who does not look up to Brandon and appreciate everything that he does.”

Traffic in the 1100 block of the bypass and surrounding areas was rerouted for several hours while state police investigated the scene. Onlookers surrounded the area that was blocked off with yellow crime-scene tape.

Brown, who was driving his personal vehicle, a blue GMC pickup truck, at the time of the shooting, has been placed on paid administrative leave until further notice, said Warren County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Tommy Smith. Brown’s wife was inside the truck with him at the time of the incident.

“It’s our policy that if we have any type of officer-involved shooting, we request that the Kentucky State Police do the investigation,” Smith said.

Brown has been employed by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office since July 2011, and he previously worked for the sheriff’s office from Oct. 1, 2010, to March 2011, according to Warren County Sheriff’s Office records. He provides court security at the Warren County Justice Center.

Bradshaw was taken by ambulance to The Medical Center and was later airlifted to Vanderbilt, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday night, said Trooper Jonathan Biven, spokesman for KSP Post 3.

According to a Facebook post from Bradshaw’s father, Troy Bradshaw, Brandon Bradshaw remains unresponsive and has seizures when doctors attempt to wake him. There are no definite explanations for why he remains unresponsive, but family members remain hopeful.

Brandon Bradshaw was shot three times, once in the ear and neck and twice in his arm, according to the Facebook post.

His major organs and spine were not struck by bullets, Troy Bradshaw wrote.

“We’re shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic event that has occurred,” said Laura Holderfield, director of development and communications at SKyPAC, who works with Bradshaw.

The state police investigation into the shooting will be turned over to the Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review, according to a statement from Warren County Sheriff Jerry “Peanuts” Gaines.

Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Cohron declined to discuss the incident.

Seth & Kayla {after shoot}

Seth and Kayla have a beautiful story involving years of friendship, a sad breakup, months apart and handwritten letters.

We did their after shoot on a gorgeous grey day in Idaho and had so much fun exploring the wild with these two lovely souls.

CONGRATS, Seth and Kayla. We are sooo happy for you and can't wait for another photo/sandwich date. Let's dream of next week?

And We're Back!

Okay, I have to confess that as we went to bed to a snowing world last night, I begged Jonathan to declare a "Grime Family snow day" for Wednesday. But he seemed to think that we should work today since we've been away for a full two months.

My response? Hmmmph.

In the end we compromised on "lazy, lazy morning and work commences at noon." Man, we love being self-employed!

306271_434329746642715_1868390525_n

We lived it up this a.m. with blankets, Americanos and "Big Bang Theory" in bed. (Thank you Shirley Grime for this Christmas gift!)

And...I at least put my nose the grindstone at 12:03 exactly. What a life.

And now-my TO DO list awaits.

It goes something like this:

to do in next two weeks:

enjoy Jonathan

enjoy Lulu

enjoy life

Meet our Thomasons.

We got home last evening and (embarrassingly early bedtime aside) have spent the last half day getting re-settled into our life. Grocery shopping, post office, un-packing our bags and apartment, business phone calls....

But I (Layne) snuck away this afternoon to check out the free coffee McDonald's is giving away all week (what? You know I like a deal) and actually spend an hour online. It's been awhile and I think my computer misses me.

It seems fitting for our first blog back to be a sneak peak of a family shoot we did with some of our Very Favorite People while we were traveling.

We are a bit behind on posting our shoots (something about "living in the moment"), but we'll catch up soon!

World, meet Mat, Aimee, Kindle & baby (bump).

We LOVE you guys! Here's to foreverrrrrrr.

"I wanna be a millionaire so stinkin' bad..."

We'd buy Joseph a car-and Mat & Aimee too,

Give Chris & Mel money for a house downpayment as a wedding gift,

Buy my mom a house so she wouldn't need to get a second job,

Pay fees for all the V for V DTS students,

Build a few homes for the orphans of Swaziland,

Surprise our friends with plane tickets (to come see us of course),

Buy a few tons of food for the people who need it the most,

Give $100,000 to help rehabilitate the former militants of Nigeria,

54...and treat our friends to coffee every single day. Obviously.

Just saying. I think it would be pretty darn rad.

There is a Korean Chorus right outside our window as I write this....

Meet the Voice for the Voiceless media school. Aren't they cute? I know. I've been pretty happily looking at their faces all week. DTS

Today is our last day together, so we wanted you to meet. We've been talking all week about identity, dreaming and destiny.

Pretty big stuff, right?

It's been fun.

And Jono has been teaching photography, Photoshop and Illustrator in the afternoons-equally big topics on another scale.

We promise we'll write funny entries next week, you'll pee-your-pants funny.

But for now-HAPPY WEEKEND.

x.

To Be Honest.

{Because we should always be honest, right?} it's been a bit hard for me to blog while we are away on this tropical paradise.

I mean, come on-great chunks of my day are already filled with teaching (which I am Loving-the class is great-but more on this later) and meetings galore. I crave play time in all my free hours.

But, just because I'm excited about this shoot-here is a sneak peak from an after shoot we did we the adorable Seth and Kayla while we were in Couer d'Alene last week.

{We'll catch up on our postings next week!}

HELLO, Hawaii.

Okay, so....we have only actually been to the beach once this week, for a sunset picnic....not as romantic as it sounds as there were about 30 other people around.

Layne is teaching every morning and I am teaching every afternoon.

Blah, blah, blah.

And yeah, here are some photos!

Shut.Up.

{Lucas L., I think you especially will appreciate this story.}

We Grimes love simplicity, but sometimes, quite frankly, things get complicated. ...Like the time a few months ago when I {Layne} tried to book our tickets for this trip from Redding to Spokane to Kona to home. Six hours later...I got off my third phone call with a United agent 30% frustrated {working on my kindness level peeps} with Jono + Laynie getting to Kona on separate flights.

Sigh. Despite the inconvenience, we have since accepted the inevitable and hugged each other goodbye at 4:30 this a.m. when Jonathan left to catch his flight.

I went back to sleep for two more hours before I headed to the airport alone. {How did he end up on the 6 a.m. flight and I on the 8:50 a.m. one? Hmmm. Sorry babes!}

...I arrived at my gate about half an hour before we were supposed to take off...only I couldn't actually get to my gate because of the masses of people standing in my way, so I went next door for a coffee instead.

Then they announced they were giving away vouchers for people to fly to Kona tomorrow instead of today. This wasn't an option for me as I'm teaching tomorrow, so I ignored them until they paged me to the podium by name 3 times.

It turns out that right before flight time, the planes got switched and United was suddenly 100 seats short for people who want to get to Hawaii today. Oops.

Before I knew it, I was being handed a first class ticket to Kona for later today.

photo (8)

Settling in for the long haul.

photo (9)

Whaaaa?

photo (10)

My gate 2 minutes before the plane was supposed to take off. Like I said, it was insane.

So to re-cap:

On the downside:

I now have a 8-hour day at the San Francisco airport.

I land in Kona 5 hours later than originally scheduled.

On the upside:

I get to fly to Hawaii first class. (?!) Why hello dinner with wine.

Jonathan and I have a $500 travel voucher to use in the next year. I'm sure we can make this happen.

I have a $15 food voucher to spend on treats today. (I would have asked for more but...well, I'd already bought breakfast anyway.)

I have a day to catch up on my inbox, etc.

I now have a direct flight from San Fran to Kona instead of having a layover in Honolulu.

The airport has free wi-fi.

I have my blanket, laptop and hours of music on my computer.

...I'm pretty sure I came out ahead today.

....8 hours later...I caved and asked for a second food voucher. And then I had to spend the whole $20.

Who Am I?

Jonathan thought I was joking, but I {happily} bought this toiletry bag while running errands with Aimee yesterday.

I really don't know what possessed me, but the red bow could not be resisted. Just look at that shine.

Though I must tell you that I do not own even an ounce of leopard print outside of this, I swear! Jessica Simpson knows what's up.

You Know You Are in Idaho When....

We've had an amazing week with the family in Idaho-slow days of conversation, catching up with a side of work. Just the way we like it. The is Jono's first official time in the Great State that is Idaho, and it feels as if we've both been seeing the place with new eyes. Some things we've discovered.

You know you are in Idaho when...

-there is excessive beauty everywhere. We had the most wonderful drive south earlier in the week to surprise Aunt D and Uncle Shawn.

Happy Valentines Day and all That.

First of all, we are Very Happy to announce that our free wedding photography contest has at last come to a close for 2013. The winners this year are the very adorable Chelsea and Daniel. We are excited to document their upcoming September wedding. Stay tuned for more photos of these two!

cuties-1

Now you should know that we Grimes don't celebrate Valentine's Day as a general rule...but I guess we made an exception this year. Jonathan surprised me with a full set of swim regalia. {We got a giftcard to the pool for Christmas.} He didn't exactly say I looked beautiful...but I think he was proud that I will at least look legit?

A face only a mother could love? Hmmm.

I got Jono an adorable (if I do say so myself) book of date coupons. He even said we can take turns choosing the coupon we use each week-I think that meant he likes it.

Here are a few of our upcoming dates:

Kimberly & Thor {contest entry}

The most beautiful thing that Thor and I could ever hope for would be a beautiful marriage. A wedding is one day, while the marriage and relationships with the new family are the things that last, oh and the amazing photography! ;)

We both are paying off school loans and trying to save for a house.  Presently, we do not have any photographer booked and have been searching for a student photographer because that's all that seems to be in our price range. Your wonderful photography contest would give us the opportunity to have our wedding celebration documented without adding to our debt!

Currently, our plans are to have a very intimate, relaxed wedding at a bed and breakfast surrounded by natural beauty. We both love the outdoors and are constantly finding new trails to explore.  Between the two us, we’ve gone through quite a few pairs of hiking boots! I, Kim, work for the local park system as a secretary at the nature center and Thor has a geology background. It was this love of nature and the wonderful, world-wide-web that led us to find each other. Using a free dating web-site, called www.okcupid.com, we began dating in 2010 and now are looking to make this thing legit and legal!

We've already planned some of the important details such as the overall feel of the day. We would love to have a very meaningful celebration with forty of our nearest and dearest. Thor's grandpa, who everyone affectionately refers to as Pa, has already agreed that he would be honored to be our wedding officiant. He is a warm and very open person who has known us since the beginning of our relationship. He's seen us change, grow, and evolve as a couple.

Additionally, we'd like a ceremony that was above all heartfelt and genuine. Thor's grandma and my mom passed shortly after meeting each family. It would be so wonderful to plan a day that honored their memory and the huge influence they had on making us the people we are today. Both of us are very family oriented and it would mean the world to be able to share this day with them.

In order for you to gain a better appreciation of who we are as a couple we've included our proposal story that was sent out to extended family and friends.

"On Sunday, December 23rd Thor asked me to be his wife and I joyfully accepted! I knew he would eventually propose because we have talked about getting married since we first started dating, but it still came as a real surprise. He whisked me away for a surprise romantic weekend. I didn't know where we were going and all I knew was that we were heading somewhere to SE Pennsylvania. We ended up going to a town near Lancaster where a lot of Amish have their homes. It was so peaceful and relaxed. I have always been a county girl at heart so I feel most at home in a rural environment.

We stayed at this adorable little historical cottage that was so quaint and comfortable on the inside. There was no t.v. and just a radio for entertainment so we could really focus on each other without any distractions. We drank some sparkling cider the owner had left us and enjoyed each other. We also went touring to a local cave and had an amazing dinner. It was local, sustainable, and super tasty.

Then, on Sunday morning he told me to stay in bed as he was going to make me breakfast. I should have known something was amiss because I am normally the first one up on weekends and he didn't want me to sit next to him while he cooked. Without my knowledge he turned on a video camera and called for me to come down. In secret, I had designed an engagement ring for him and had been carrying it in my purse. He always expressed an interest in someday wanting an engagement ring for himself so several months earlier I found an amazing artist that design fingerprint rings. After completing a kit, I received a beautiful ring for him. I also asked the artists to inscribe the word, "Yes! Until Forever...". It was in my purse for a full month and I simply had no idea when he would propose. Without brushing my teeth or running a comb through my hair I plodded downstairs completely oblivious as to what he was up to.

Then, as the sun was rising outside, he had me sit down at the little breakfast table near the fireplace and asked me to read a letter he had written. There were such beautiful sentiments about me, us and our future. The last line said, "And now I want to ask you four words that I will never again ask anyone in my life.." and then he got down on one knee. He had asked his brother who is a professional carpenter to hand carve a sunflower with a secret compartment. He opened the middle of the flower and there sat the most exquisite ring I have ever seen in my life. Time seemed to completely stop and I was in complete shock. Some girls cry and others are silent, but not this girl. I started giggling and laughing like a little girl! I couldn't believe that it was actually happening. The whole thing seemed so surreal.

I forgot about the ring and immediately started hugging him. I picked up the flower and was examining it when I suddenly realized he was kneeling and waiting to put the ring on me. After he put it on, I had him sit down and I ran over to my purse. He looks kind of amused shocked in the video. I ran back and propose back to him. lol!  It was such a joyful moment as he read the inside of the ring and seemed utterly surprised to receive something back. We went out onto our little deck and watched the snow rise over the small stream.

Neither of us could contain our excitement as we sent a text message to our close friends and family explaining what happened and told them we'd call later. Apparently Thor had been VERY secretive. It seemed everyone knew exactly the time and day he was going to propose! Everyone from his family to my dad to the cottage owners and waiters at the restaurant the night before all knew what his plans were. In case you are curious, please feel free to look at the photos I've put in my picasa album:

I am so incredibly humbled and honored to be his fiancée! I always loved the phrase, "Grow old with me, the best is yet to be!" and now that's where our lives are heading."

Thank you so much for taking the time to consider us for your contest! We are so excited to even enter. :)
